Get Involved

Community engagement is happening in faculties and units across the campus; one place to start looking for connections across UBC is our resources page.

As part of building a strategy around UBC’s commitment to community engagement, Community Partnership staff are looking to learn from your experiences, perspectives, and contributions. We are happy to sit down for an informal conversation, join a meeting, or participate in an event on or off campus – just be in touch.

Throughout, we’ll be asking three questions in particular: Why do you value community-university engagement, and why is it important for UBC? What shared principles can we agree on to guide community-university engagement? If there were one thing I could change about the way UBC engages with communities, it would be… If you have thoughts, get involved below, and/or submit your comments.

Brown-bag lunches 2014

Interpersonal relationships are at the heart of community engaged work. We’ve found that the best conversations emerge over tea, at lunch, or during a walk across campus. The work of building a community engagement strategy is long-term; we’ve just begun this journey, and value honest conversation with external and internal communities.

During summer 2014, we invited you to join us in our office at Cecil Green Park House for a brown bag lunch with a view of the ocean. This fall, we’d like to continue the conversations about community engagement. If you provide the space, we’ll bring a few questions to ask, visuals/ideas to interact with, and the opportunity to connect with others involved in community engagement from across campus and beyond. Check back here for brown-bags across campus, starting in October. If you’d like to suggest a location for a lunch, email Mali at mali.bain@ubc.ca

Past events

We’ve enjoyed the opportunity to share emerging ideas and learn from those across campus doing this work. The ideas shared in these brown-bag lunches will continue to inform our understanding of community engagement and shape a community engagement strategy.

Join a community engagement conversation

Starting in fall 2014, and building on examples of community engagement collected throughout the summer, the Community Partnership unit will begin co-hosting sessions with other groups to explore specific questions and forms of community engagement in more depth.

Please check back for details about upcoming sessions. If you are interested in co-hosting a conversation about community engagement, either on or off-campus, please email Mali at mali.bain@ubc.ca.

Calendar of Community Engagement-related Events

Community Engagement happens at UBC in many forms and contexts. On this page, we’ll share community engagement-related events that are happening on UBC’s campuses and beyond, as well as information about events our office is hosting or co-hosting. Are you hosting a gathering, celebration, conference, event, or meeting that involves communities within and beyond UBC? Let us know about it and we’ll add it to our calendar (under development). Check back regularly for updates!
